The Kuk Sool Won Belt System and Promotions

There are various ways that we recognise achievements in Kuk Sool Won. Like many martial arts, we operate a belt system. You learn a specific syllabus for each belt level and depending on your age. When your instructor feels you are ready, you are invited to test for a belt. Each belt marks what you have learnt and what you are ready to move on to.

Attaining the black belt requires you to  complete two ‘national testings’ in front of the grandmaster and founder of Kuk Sool Won, In Hyuk Suh. These tests must be at least one year apart and form part of the total minimum 8 tests required at brown belt. Two such national tests are required for every black belt level (dahn).

Only the grandmaster can award your black belt. It represents significant time and effort, perseverance and determination. In Kuk Sool Won, great emphasis is placed on the personal journey you embark on, once you commit to this martial art. With this in mind, each black belt acts a significant marker of your achievements as people and as martial artists.

Competitions

The WKSA also holds competitions in the art of Kuk Sool Won. These are closed competitions for WKSA members only. That said, they are large events and offer a great opportunity for you to meet your peers and see a cross section of skill, ability and aspects of Kuk Sool Won. We actively encourage you to take part in competitions.

Seminars

Kuk Sool Won seminars provide opportunities for you to be taught by some of the highest ranking practitioners of Kuk Sool Won in the world. These include the sons of the grandmaster—Kuk Sa Nim, Suh In Hyuk—whose martial arts lineage goes back sixteen generations.

Seminars offer a chance to delve into aspects of Kuk Sool Won which you may not encounter in regular training. They facilitate ‘unification’ or consistency in practice which means that no matter where you happen to train Kuk Sool Won, you will be learning the same things as your peers around the world.
